Multinational appliance and electronics company LG has initiated a recall of more than 137,000 of its stoves sold in Canada, citing potential fire hazards after receiving reports of injuries and incidents associated with the appliances.

The recall was prompted by reports of accidental activation of the front knobs on several different models of slide-in and freestanding LG electric ranges, Health Canada said in a Feb. 26 advisory.

“Front-mounted knobs on the recalled ranges can be activated by accidental contact by humans or pets, posing a fire hazard,” the federal agency said.

The company had received eight incident reports and two injury reports in Canada as of Feb. 12. The injuries included one minor cut and one minor burn.

Health Canada said 137,257 of the LG electric ranges were sold in Canada between May 2016 and June 2024. The stoves were manufactured in South Korea and Mexico.

The affected ranges come in both black and stainless steel and are 30 inches (76.2 centimetres) wide. The model number is located inside the oven door or storage drawer located on the bottom of the oven, the advisory said.

Owning a stove included in the list of recalled appliances does not necessarily prohibit its use. Health Canada said customers should immediately contact LG Electronics Canada Inc., but they can continue using their range while awaiting a response.

Customers will receive a free warning label and instructions from the company, LG said in a press release.

“The label reminds consumers to use LG’s Lock Out/Control Lock function on the range control panel to disable activation of the heating elements when the range is not in use,” LG said.

LG is also asking customers to view an instructional video that demonstrates the proper use of the control lock feature.

The video shows that the lock function is activated by pressing a button for three seconds. An audible beep or melody will sound to confirm the lock function is on and the control panel will display a lock icon, the company said. To disable the lock function and operate the cooktop, press the designated button again for a duration of three seconds.

Consumers can contact LG Electronics Canada, Inc. by telephone, by email, or by visiting the company website.
