A six-year-old child is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a weekend stabbing in downtown Halifax that led to the arrest of a teenager, police say.

Officers responded to the 1900-block of Barrington Street at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Feb. 23, where a six-year-old child was found with multiple stab wounds, Halifax Regional Police said in a press release.

The child was transported by ambulance to the IWK Health Centre, which is equipped with a pediatric trauma centre.

A suspect was located at the scene and was taken into custody, police said.

Elliott Chorny, 19, has since been charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace in connection with the child’s stabbing, according to a Feb. 24 update released by police.

“The victim and the suspect are not believed to be known to each other,” police said in the statement, adding that Chorny is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court this morning to answer to the charges.

Police have yet to release the gender of the child or any details about what may have precipitated the attack. The Epoch Times contacted Halifax police for an update on the child’s condition but did not receive a response before publication.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston took to social media after news of the stabbing incident.

“I struggle to fully express my outrage and sadness at learning about this attack on an innocent child in Halifax this afternoon,” Houston wrote. “My thoughts are with the victim and their family. The person who did this is clearly a threat to the public and should be kept locked behind bars.”

The stabbing remains under investigation by the Integrated Criminal Investigative Division of the Halifax Regional Police.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have video from the area at the time of the incident to submit it to police.
