Several types of pumpkin seeds sold in Ontario have been recalled over possible salmonella contamination, with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) saying the recall could expand to include additional products.

The recall, issued on May 12, expands the CFIA’s initial recall of pumpkin seeds issued on May 7.

The recall expansion includes 250 gram packages of Orasta brand Organic Pumpkin Seeds, with the universal product code (UPC) 7 28795 59321 6. The seeds were sold from April 17, 2025, to May 10, 2025, at Fiesta Farms grocery store in Toronto.

The recall also includes Fine Goods Wholesome brand product Raw European Pumpkin Seeds Organic, sold from April 24, 2025, to May 6, 2025, at grocer The Sweet Potato in Toronto. UPC numbers of the impacted packages starts with 0205069.

The recall also includes Organic European Pumpkin Seeds, sold from March 2025 to May 8, 2025, at Beaches Natural Foods on Queen Street in Toronto. Both the brand and UPC numbers for the affected products were not listed on the recall notice.

Consumers are advised to throw out the affected product or return it to the store where it was purchased.

CFIA said that those who have become sick after consuming the seeds should contact their doctor or health-care provider. The agency advised consumers not to eat, sell, distribute or use the product in any way.

“Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” the CFIA said.

It said that young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems can get serious and sometimes deadly infections as a result of consuming contaminated products.

“Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea,” CFIA said, adding that long-term complications can include severe arthritis.

CFIA said the recall was triggered by a recall in another country. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the products in Canada, the agency said.

CFIA previously issued a recall for Schalk Mühle brand Organic Austrian Pumpkin Seeds that were distributed in 25 kilogram packages throughout Ontario and Quebec. Lot numbers of the affected products are 248964.

On May 9, CFIA included Organic Euro pumpkin seeds sold in 11 pounds and 22 pound packages with UPC codes 2237370080425 and 8745921495728. The products were sold in Ontario.

A day later, the agency issued a recall for organic pumpkin seeds from Austria sold at The Stone Store in Guelph, Ont., from March 30 to May 7. It also included organic pumpkin seeds sold at The Hope Eco-Farm Store between March 21 and May 9.
