After the votes in the Quebec riding of Terrebonne were validated, it has been determined that Bloc Québécois MP Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné has won re-election, reducing the Liberal Party’s seat count to 168.

Sinclair-Desgagné said in a social media statement that she had come out with a lead of 44 votes and that a judicial recount would likely take place. “Thank you for your continued support and stay tuned for the future. I hope to have the honour to represent Terrebonne again in the coming years,” she said.

The initial results from the April 28 election showed that Liberal candidate Tatiana Auguste had beaten Sinclair-Desgagné by just 35 votes. But the new results by Elections Canada showed that Sinclair-Desgagné actually beat Auguste by 44 votes.

Elections Canada states that judicial recounts must happen in cases where the difference in votes for two candidates is less than 1/1,000 of the votes cast, or where a judge has “credible affidavit evidence” that there was an error in the counting of votes.

Sinclair-Desgagné has served as a Bloc MP for the riding of Terrebonne since 2021, and has served as the Bloc’s critic of public finances and pandemic programs and Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions.

On April 29, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet called for a “partisan truce” with other federal party leaders following the election, saying Canadians want stability in Parliament to address the ongoing trade war with the United States.

Sinclair-Desgagné’s victory in the riding has brought the Bloc’s seat count up to 23, and pushed the Liberals further away from a majority of 172 seats. The Conservatives won 144 seats in the election, while the New Democrats won seven seats, and the Green Party won one seat.

The Bloc has seen its seat count significantly reduced compared to the 32 seats it won in the 2021 election.
