As one storm slams into Newfoundland and Labrador today, another is rearing up to hit Ontario and Quebec on the weekend.

Valentine’s Day brought winter storm warnings to Eastern Canada, forecasting snowfalls up to 45 and 55 centimetres for central, western and southern Newfoundland and the north coast of Labrador.

Jim Prime with Environment Canada says the back end of the slow-moving system that hit Ontario and Quebec earlier this week is making a mess of Newfoundland and Labrador and bringing high winds to western P.E.I. and Cape Breton.

The meteorologist says ice on the ocean around P.E.I. is shielding the island from snow, but the same isn’t true of Cape Breton, where 30 to 45 cm of snow is expected in the west.

Meanwhile, Environment Canada meteorologist Steven Flisfeder says another storm is rumbling toward Central Canada and expected to bring five to 10 cm of snow to southwestern Ontario.

He says the region will start seeing snow Saturday morning as the weather front moves in and sweeps eastward toward Quebec and Atlantic Canada.
