A shampoo sold both online and in department and beauty stores has been recalled in Canada due to the risk of microbial contamination.

Amika Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant Shampoo could be contaminated with Pluralibacter gergoviae, a bacterium commonly found in water, soil, and various cosmetic and personal care items, Health Canada said in a Feb. 7 advisory.

The New York-based hair care brand received 48 reports of “foul odour” and two reports of irritation or allergic reaction in Canada as of Jan. 27, the advisory said.

The Amika products affected by the recall are: Mirrorball Shampoo + Conditioner 20 ml Duo, Mirrorball Shampoo 1L, Mirrorball Shampoo 275 ml, Mirrorball Shampoo 500 ml, and Mirrorball Shampoo 60 ml.

Approximately 95,000 units of the affected products were sold in Canada between May 2023 and November 2024, the recall notice said.

“Individuals with certain health problems or compromised immune systems are at an increased risk of infection if they use the contaminated product,” the health agency said, adding that the bacteria “poses little medical risk to healthy individuals.”

The presence of microbial contamination in beauty products can trigger skin irritation, allergic reactions, and infections in some users.

Customers should “immediately stop using” the recalled shampoo, Health Canada said, adding that the products can be returned with proof of purchase to obtain a refund.

Glue Recall

Five-pack Super Glue has also been recalled due to improper labelling and lack of child-resistant packaging.

The product has been recalled because it does not adhere to the labelling and packaging regulations for quick-bonding adhesives stipulated by the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, Health Canada said in a Feb. 5 advisory.

“This type of glue is capable of bonding skin instantly,” the recall notice said. “The lack of child-resistant packaging could result in unintentional exposure to the products and lead to serious illness or injury.”

The 5 Pack Super Glue is identifiable by the barcode 8962086. Each tube weighs three grams, has a black body with white tips, and features the inscription “SUPER GLUE” in red letters.

More than 156,000 units of the China-manufactured products were sold in Canada from February 2021 to January 2025. No injuries had been reported in Canada as of Jan. 29.

Consumers can return the glue to Princess Auto for a refund.
